Este trabajo dirigido por José Luis López-Linares indaga en la realidad del chileno a través de entrevistas a sus allegados. Bolaño pasó sus últimos años en España, donde llevó una vida de austeridad cercana a la pobreza. A diferencia de los escritores del 'boom' literario de la novela sudamericana de los años 60 y 70, que se convirtieron en estrellas mediáticas, la vida de Bolaño se acerca más a la de los grandes escritores malditos de comienzos del siglo XX que a la que se puede asociar con un escritor de culto y reconocido. Este documental analiza su papel como escritor, pero también como personaje extraño que crea su propia leyenda; desvela lo que hay de cierto y de mentira en su propia autobiografía.
